In January 2014, approximately 10,000 gallons of crude MCHM chemical leaked from a holding tank at a storage facility into the ground near the Elk River in West Virginia, contaminating both the river and the public water supply downstream from the plant. A “do-not-use” advisory was issued leaving at least 300,000 residents in nine counties without access to potable water for up to 10 days.
While the legal, financial, environmental and health-related impact has yet to be fully calculated in the aftermath of this devastating chemical spill, the initial clean-up costs to the business are known to have exceeded $800,000 in the first week alone. Fines and litigation costs have since forced the company to declare bankruptcy.

When viewed with the naked eye, the clear, colorless appearance of crude MCHM is virtually undetectable in soil or water. After adding a small amount of M-GLO fluorescent dye, the chemical will glow a bright yellow color under high-intensity long-wave UV (365 nm) light, making leaks and spills much easier to trace!

NOTE: The dilution ratio of M-GLO fluorescent dye to the host fluid shown in the chart is only a guideline. The ratio can be increased or decreased depending on the fluorescent response required and the ambient lighting conditions. A simple way to check for proper fluorescence is to remove a small amount of host fluid from the system and add the suggested amount of dye to it. Then shine the UV inspection lamp on this sample mixture and check for a bright fluorescent response.
