Spectronics Corporation, a global leader in fluorescent leak detection, has an opening for Chief Chemist.  The candidate must be a self-starter and a team player with excellent communications skills.  In-depth knowledge of organic chemistry, polymerization, and synthetic lubricants. Knowledge of fluorescent chemicals, refrigerants, refrigeration and air-conditioning, and work experience in an industrial manufacturing environment is a plus.


  • Closely follow the trend of the global fluorescent leak detection markets, strategize the company’s research and development effort in new fluorescent chemicals
  • Work with field Sales Managers and the engineering team on new application concepts
  • Work closely with the internal engineering team and external suppliers to develop new fluorescent chemicals that meet application requirements
  • Conduct various tests internal and externally per applicable standards (ASHRAE and SAE, etc.)
  • Manage all chemical projects and work with Product Management team to ensure deadlines are met
  • Establish new chemical formulations and product specifications and manage chemical formula database
  • Define raw material specifications and identify sources for raw chemical materials
  • Establish new chemical suppliers. Visit suppliers if needed
  • Create and manage Bills of Materials for chemical products
  • Provide support and training in chemical process procedures
  • Provide company-wide technical support in chemical field
  • Provide application support to Sales Managers in chemical field; Visit customers if needed
  • Work with QC to investigate chemical issues involving raw materials or blended dye products
  • Manage and oversee Chemical Lab and any associated staff;
  • Representing the company in attending technical seminars, conferences, and committees
  • Other tasks or projects maybe assigned by upper management

Competencies / Skills:

Proficient at common characterization methods in a general chemistry lab environment

Supervisory Responsibilities:


Required Education & Experience

Master’s Degree in Chemistry

5 – 10 years of work experience

Preferred Education & Experience:

PhD in Chemistry

3 – 5 years of experience

Certifications & Licenses


Other Requirements:

Minimum five (5) patents


Some travel is required for visiting customers, suppliers, trade shows, and technical conferences.

Work Environment:

This job operates in a professional office and chemical laboratory environment.

The performance of this position will require exposure to the manufacturing areas, which may require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses with side shields and mandatory hearing protection.
